Hyundai Doosan Infracore Signs Contract to Exclusively Develop K2 Tank Engines

Hyundai Doosan Infracore’s 1,500 horsepower tank engine that will be applied to K2 tanks and exported to Poland.

Hyundai Doosan Infracore, a subsidiary of Hyundai Heavy Industries Group (CEO: President Cho Young-cheul), will be presenting their locally produced tank engines for the first time to the global market.


Hyundai Doosan Infracore announced Tuesday, Dec 13 that it signed a contract worth 180 billion KRW to supply tank engines to Hyundai Rotem. Under this contract, the company will be supplying their locally developed 1,500 horsepower engines which will be applied to K2 tanks and exported to Poland, for three consecutive years starting from June 2023.


This contract was signed as a follow up of Hyundai Rotem’s contract with Poland’s state defense procurement agency last July to supply the first batch of 180 K2 tank units with the aim to introduce next generation battle tanks and replace old, degraded tanks currently used in Poland.


Then K2 tank engine bound for Poland is a 27-liter V-type 12-cylinder engine, with 1,500 horsepower which allows a 56-ton tank to drive at a maximum speed of 70 kilometers per hour. It is also boasts excellent fuel economy and good start at low temperatures.


By exporting proprietary engines, Hyundai Doosan Infacore gained the opportunity to show off their excellent tank engine technology to global consumers and thus aims to gradually increase markets share in areas such as Europe and the Middle East. Once a contract between Hyundai Rotem and Poland’s state defense procurement agency to supply a second batch of K2 tanks is signed, Hyundai Doosan Infracore will be able to gain another chance to win more orders.


A representative of Hyundai Doosan Infracore noted, “This will be the first time showing the global market our excellence in battle tank engines," and added, “We will use this opportunity wisely and work on advancing our technology to win more engine contracts."


Hyundai Doosan Infracore first started its engine business domestically in 1958 and recorded a revenue of 854.8 billion KRW this year, a 20.1% increase YoY, with the favorable construction equipment market and increased demand for generators in the previous year. <EOD>
